Blackjack is the king of casino games. One of the only games that you can, for a short while at least, get the edge on the casino. You have all read about it – card counting. However can you card-count online? At first glance one would’ve thought so. After all, online casinos host games of single-deck blackjack. There is no eye-in-the-sky to watch you, and you can play at your own pace –so you can write down the card values as they come are dealt! It should be plain sailing.
The issue is that there is a fundamental difference between a land-based game of single deck blackjack and an online one. In a land-based game, the deck is shuffled and cut pre the game-start, but once the first card is dealt, the deck is played straight though (however increasingly not played through to the end, so the end-portion of the deck which can spell such gold on a positive deck can often be taken away.
In an online game of single deck blackjack, the cards are effectively shuffled after each round is dealt. Even if this wasn’t the case, all single-deck blackjack I have seen online only allows the player to play in one box so the player can only see three, sometimes 4 cards before deciding whether to take another card or not. Even varying your bet is not going to work as the deck is shuffled between each round so you have nothing to go on at all.
The only way to gain the edge in online blackjack (and this is only relative as the casino always has the edge) is to find the blackjack game with the best odds. Try and find the rare game where the dealer draws a card on soft 17, you can split pretty much anything and even surrender (sometimes in the four deck games).
You also need to know the basic rules of blackjack and of course are playing on a table where everyone has a decent understanding of the game.

Online blackjack is a genuine skill game, with basic strategy charts usable by recreational players. Do yourself a favour and print off a chart and take your gaming enjoyment to another level of class and fun. However, don't forget that strategic blackjack can also help you win more frequently. Check out some simple tips for using along side a blackjack strategy chart…..
Making the most of a blackjack edge
If you manage to grasp the basics and start applying blackjack strategy to a decent level (in other words make the right moves 99% of the time) – then you stand an excellent chance of limiting the dealer's edge to a low level. However, remember the following tips when wondering why you're still getting rewards like a blackjack novice……
Luck > Luck does significantly affect the blackjack table, so even the pro's have to occasionally bite their lip and take a hit from the dealer. The key is to give a blackjack strategy a fair crack before jacking it in for the slot machines. For example, just because you're applying basic strategy but are down 20 credits after 5 sessions – doesn't mean it's not worth continuing with. In fact, it could just be that your luck's out! Play at least 20 sessions perfectly before making judgement.
Frequency > With the tip above still fresh in your mind, it's advisable to play blackjack regularly if you want to see the merits of strategic blackjack. For example, the results gleaned in single sessions don't mean much – but when you've played 1000 hands or 200 sessions or some such number, you'll be able to see if you've got the power to limit the casino's edge using blackjack skill.
Staking > Once you're playing online blackjack regularly with a strategy and applying it well, there's one more major factor to think about – your staking plan. Essentially, it's wise to play blackjack with a pre-set level credit size (such as 0.10, 0.50, 1.00 etc). This gaming approach enables you to evaluate your strategic strength. In contrast if you play with random stake levels, it's hard to really know whether a strategy is working.
