Blackjack is the king of casino games. One of the only games that you can, for a short while at least, get the edge on the casino. You have all read about it – card counting. However can you card-count online? At first glance one would’ve thought so. After all, online casinos host games of single-deck blackjack. There is no eye-in-the-sky to watch you, and you can play at your own pace –so you can write down the card values as they come are dealt! It should be plain sailing.
The issue is that there is a fundamental difference between a land-based game of single deck blackjack and an online one. In a land-based game, the deck is shuffled and cut pre the game-start, but once the first card is dealt, the deck is played straight though (however increasingly not played through to the end, so the end-portion of the deck which can spell such gold on a positive deck can often be taken away.
In an online game of single deck blackjack, the cards are effectively shuffled after each round is dealt. Even if this wasn’t the case, all single-deck blackjack I have seen online only allows the player to play in one box so the player can only see three, sometimes 4 cards before deciding whether to take another card or not. Even varying your bet is not going to work as the deck is shuffled between each round so you have nothing to go on at all.
The only way to gain the edge in online blackjack (and this is only relative as the casino always has the edge) is to find the blackjack game with the best odds. Try and find the rare game where the dealer draws a card on soft 17, you can split pretty much anything and even surrender (sometimes in the four deck games).
You also need to know the basic rules of blackjack and of course are playing on a table where everyone has a decent understanding of the game.
